Masked

“Masked” by Allison McKowen

On the walls of the room
sat multiple different faces.
All have the same structure
but are composed of different expressions.
All looked uneasily familiar,
different in only one specific way.

In this room was a comforting feeling.
Some of the happiness,
Ones of excitement.
Some faces gave an uneasy feeling
Ones of betrayal,
others of uncontrollable sadness.

All are given a familiar feeling.
Confused, I sat there looking at all the pictures,
wondering and pondering where I had seen them.
Knowing they are familiar,
not knowing how.

Where have I seen these faces before?
Sitting there making the connections between them all,
All with an underlying same foundation.
Realizing these faces aren’t just faces,
They are masks.

Interchangeable and disposable.
Underneath the mask is a person’s skeleton.
The person who helps everyone,
but who helps them?
Realizing I am the person hiding under the mask,
the masks hiding my true person.
